Traditionally companies have turned to rugged computing technologies and application software to increase accuracy, efficiency and workforce productivity while lowering costs. They have used full-screen, fixed-mount computers on fork trucks for operator verification and dynamic asset location and smaller handheld computers for inventory management and order picking. Now there is a single device that can do all this while lowering the cost of technology acquisition, development and deployment—the rugged tablet PC.

A rugged tablet PC can be mounted on a forklift for use while standing or sitting. Onboard operators can verify credentials and access messages, routing instructions, and asset location information on the go. Or they can un-dock the tablet PC to perform cycle counting, asset management, put-away and order picking tasks.

Workers can use rugged Tablet PC systems with Microsoft Windows 7 to extend full versions of ERP systems to warehouse staff at the point of work. In addition to accessing back-office data, collecting data and communicating it in real-time, mobile workers can check email, access databases and view presentations anywhere, anytime.

By standardizing on a single rugged tablet PC to perform both forklift tasks and mobile data collection in the warehouse, companies can realize substantially lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) savings in the following three main areas:

Lower Initial Hardware Costs: A single xTablet does the work of two devices, cutting upfront hardware costs not only eliminates the need to purchase a separate handheld, the cost is 20 to 30 percent less than most stationary forklift mounted computers.

Lower Development & Deployment Costs: Rugged tablet PCs that run on a full Windows 7 operating system, save application development costs. Many mobile workers are likely to be already familiar with the Windows OS, making training easier and faster.

Lower Repair & Support Costs: Standardizing on a single rugged tablet PC can save on repair and support costs. Users save on spares inventory by stocking parts for only one device. Since rugged tablet PC systems are designed for military-grade harsh environments, they see maximum uptime and greater productivity and efficiency.
